This camping trip was one we’ll never forget. For many, many years camping along the Metolius River was something we’d always wanted to do. In our opinion, it’s central Oregon at its best. We love the Ponderosa pines contrasted against the crisp, blue sky, and the miles of meadows and river to walk along!

We had planned our first real camping trip to Suttle Lake, just a few miles away. We were to have arrived on Sunday for a three day stay at the park. On a whim, I decided to see if there was something available at Camp Sherman on Saturday night and there was. It wasn’t a river view, but just being in the area was good enough so I booked it.

When we arrived to the Smiling River Campground, we were told that a river site had come available (site 19). It was all that we had hoped for and more. We were just feet away from the river, we had a completely private spot and to top it off there were no bugs!!

We put up camp quickly an spent a wonderful night around the campfire roasting s’mores and talking with the boys. We enjoyed a hearty breakfast and a quick walk around the area before packing up and heading to Suttle Lake. I hated to leave and even considered just giving up our Blue Bay reservations…but I’m glad I didn’t…Blue Bay ended up being just as beautiful!
