I like McNeil campground for lots of reasons.
A) It’s close to home.
B) It’s sunny and open compared to most campgrounds on Mt. Hood.
C) Hardly anyone knows about it!
D) You can’t make reservations and there’s never anyone there!
E) It’s a perfect base camp for lots of good hiking.
F) HUGE private sites.
Although the weather here in Oregon is perfect for camping during the summers, you need to be planners in order to get reservations and we’re not planners. We enjoy just picking up and going and that’s challenging June through September. We end up at McNeil a lot because of that – but that’s okay with me!!
Be advised that if you do plan to camp at McNeil, there is no drinking water and because the vegetation is less dense, it does get warm during the afternoons. Besides that, it’s just plain wonderful!
nice post, makes me want to go camping..like right now…awesome camper btw

We were up on Mt Hood a couple weekends ago scouting out campsites and came across McNeil. Drove through and had to stop and take a picture of a gorgeous little Airstream. My husband asked, “do you think it’s that blog you follow of the tiny airstream?” Nah…couldn’t be. 😀 Now I’m pretty sure it was you guys! Same campsite too. Couldn’t believe it.
