The driest summer in Oregon history means lots of wildfires, making it almost impossible to find a place in the northwest where the skies aren’t thick with smoke.

Last week we headed off to central Oregon as a last hurrah before school started. We reserved a favorite place on Suttle Lake and hoped for the best. Good news was that the campground was empty…bad news was that the caldera was filled with smoke making it almost impossible to see across the lake. Although we didn’t get the typical central Oregon blue skies we did get some spectacular sunsets!

One of the clearer moments but you can still see the smoke in the sunlight.

This is a great campground and a few campsites have water access.

Campfires were still allowed for the first two nights. The days were warm but the nights were COLD!

Fire sky and a view of our camp site. Picked up some neat solar lights that worked great!

A fun couple of days at the lake but we headed out a day early when we found a spot in Camp Sherman. We decided to extend our camping another three days, smoke or no smoke….
